cup awardNow's the time to applaud our standards superstars. So, if you know someone who has shone as a creator or user of standards in the last year, why not nominate them for 2021's BSI Standards Awards? As a BSI Member committed to excellence in standards, it might well be you.

Standards user? Or creator?

Each year, the BSI’s awards ceremony celebrates the hard work and innovation shown by the people and organizations that develop standards and apply them in practice.

There are two categories of award: BSI Standards Makers Awards and BSI Standards Users Awards. Anyone can nominate an individual or organization for this special recognition

Going above and beyond

Last year’s BSI Awards celebrated, amongst others, a team from Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), the procurement arm of the MOD, that identified a way to save time for defence workers at a crucial point in the pandemic.

As many MOD staff were brought in to help with anything from frontline work to procurement of essential personal protective equipment and managing key supply chains, workers had to use standards for guidance - under huge pressure.

Alan Anderson, IT Operations Manager in UK Defence Standardization (DStan) with responsibility for managing the MOD’s BSI membership, identified the need for a one-stop shop containing all the relevant standards MOD personnel used frequently. Working with BSI, a COVID-19 Standards Collection was developed within the BSOL platform. A communications campaign across the MOD ensured workers were aware of the resource and maximized usage. Very quickly, rapidly increasing downloads of the relevant standards were doing the job across 149 MOD departments.

The project was recognized by the Special 2020 Edition BSI Standards Awards who singled out DE&S for providing a platform that saved valuable time for people doing critical work within the UK’s COVID-19 response. You can read the full story here
