Green speed

In pole position for using standards to enable sustainability is the world’s only electrically-powered motor racing World Championship.
ABB FiA Forumula E brings the thrill of electric racing to city-centre circuits around the world from London to Mexico City, Berlin to Seoul. Wherever it goes, the series communicates the central importance of sustainability to all our daily lives.
So, not unsurprisingly, their award is for using BS ISO 20121 Event sustainability management systems  to deliver their World Championship series of events.
The standard was instrumental in building a more robust legal register to manage risks. Plus they were recognised for developing trustworthy collaborations with key partners and sponsors through an integrated waste management and recycling plan.
This forward-thinking, innovative approach to event sustainability saved, as one example, the equivalent of over 200,000 330ml single-use plastic bottles in one season alone through hydration stations and reusable water pouches.

Driving change

The next BSI Member to be recognised is The International Group - Civil Aviation Authority, responsible for technical cooperation, consulting and aviation training globally.
Their award recognizes the use of standards to increase the resilience of their business and mitigate risks.
The International Group - Civil Aviation Authority developed that resilience using BS EN ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems .
Implementing this standard was vital in supporting the team with their transition to a digital first approach for delivering a large portfolio of aviation training courses for the global aviation industry.
This standard was a key driver for business change and was fundamental in enabling this winner to maintain exceptional customer satisfaction during and after the digital transition.

Avoiding hazards

Safety is an absolutely critical factor in many industries. Fortress Safety, a specialist in providing safety solutions in automation, won their award for using standards to drive safety.
BS EN ISO 14119 Safety of machinery - Interlocking devices associated with guards and BS EN ISO 13849-1 Safety of machinery - Safety related parts of control systems were the standards in this case. They were used in the creation of a new product range which contributes to safe access to and control of industrial machinery in explosive and hazardous environments.
Their use of the standard enabled them to provide exceptionally safe products and extend their use to even more applications and industries.

Congratulations to our BSI members on their awards. It’s certainly a great way to end the year.
